The Indian Railway Welfare Organisation builds dwelling units for serving and retired railway employees through self-financing schemes across the country.
Indian Railway Welfare Organisation (IRWO) was set up on 25 September 1989 under the patronage of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, for the purpose of promoting social welfare schemes such as helping serving and retired railway employees acquire accommodation on a “no profit no loss” basis. It is registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, with headquarters at New Delhi and zonal offices at Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai and Mumbai.
The Chairman of the Railway Board is the Patron of the organisation. It is managed by a Governing Body made up of ex-officio members from the Ministry of Railways, representatives of the railway unions and officers’ associations, the executive officers of the organisation, representatives of members from projects under execution, and co-opted members nominated for their specialised knowledge.
Day-to-day affairs are managed by the Managing Director, Director Technical and Director Finance. The present activity is the construction of houses for members all over the country through self-financing schemes.

Membership of IRWO is open at all times. Any eligible person may become a member subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria in the General Rules. Applications are submitted in the membership application form at the IRWO corporate office in New Delhi.
The membership fee is Rs. 1,000 (non-refundable) for all types of dwelling units. On approval, the applicant is allotted a membership number in order of receipt of the application. This number must be quoted in all correspondence with IRWO and when applying for specific housing schemes.

The last date for receipt of applications for the Zirakpur Phase II scheme has been extended up to 10 February 2012. The brochure includes separate application forms for IRWO members, blood relations of members and other eligible categories.
The conveyance deed for the plot of land for the Gurgaon Phase II housing scheme (Sector 56) has been executed with HUDA. Allottees can now execute the conveyance deed with an IRWO representative to register the property in their name. Registration is done in the joint name of the allottee and spouse.
Results of the computerised draw of lots for Lucknow Phase III, held at IRWO's office on 15 December 2011, list allottees with their specific dwelling units for Types II, III and IV.
The scheme was open from 8 December 2011 to 16 February 2012. Applicants could give up to three options for the type of dwelling unit required.
Allottees remitting dues by RTGS must ensure the sender-to-receiver information reaches IRWO by post or email so that the remittance can be linked to their account.
Members are requested to mention their primary registration number in all correspondence, proposals and grievances to facilitate disposal of their cases.
